There are so many different types of handyman services available—and different handymen specialize in different things. So, not every professional handyman will offer the same services—even if they advertise “general handyman services” or something similar.
With this in mind, here’s a list of handyman services that covers some of the common tasks that these pros might perform.
Types of Handyman Services
#1) Drywall Installation
One of the more common tasks that professional handyman services may specialize in is the installation of new drywall during a home remodel or after a water damage remediation job.
General handyman services often have the equipment necessary to measure, cut, and install drywall boards in homes with skill and precision.
#2) Fixture Replacement
Over time, fixtures in homes, such as kitchen faucets, cabinets, lighting systems, etc., may wear out or break from everyday use. While many home fixtures can be readily replaced by an amateur do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiast, there are homeowners who are either too busy to handle the task themselves or just prefer to let a professional do the job to make sure it’s done right.
Because many fixture replacement jobs don’t require a license, they can often be done by most general handyman service professionals. However, there may be situations where replacing a particular fixture, such as a faucet or lighting system, requires a specialized license.
#3) Smart Home Upgrade Installation
With this handyman service, a pro comes out to the home and installs any number of smart home devices – including thermostats, doorbells and sensors. . It’s important to check with the handyman to be sure they are certified to install your particular product and brand, as there are many types, and some may require specialist knowledge of home electrical systems or other detailed information.
#4) Painting for the Interior and Exterior
Of all the types of handyman services that can be requested, painting interior or exterior walls has to be one of the most common. Painting a house is a lot of work, especially if the house is occupied. Many homeowners or property managers use painting services to increase the curb appeal of a home before selling it—often getting a positive return on investment by selling the house quicker or for more money.
General handyman services will frequently take requests to repaint a home, and often have the right tools for the job (such as paint rollers, drop cloths, tape, furniture covers, and ladders). Some handyman services even specialize in painting services because they’re so popular.
#5) Power Washing
Sidewalks, exterior walls, driveways, garage floors, roofs, and other surfaces can become caked in dirt and other debris—causing severe discoloration. Power washing can be used as a basic property maintenance measure to keep the exterior of a home looking pristine.
Not every general handyman service has the right equipment for power washing, though. A high-grade water compressor can prove to be expensive and requires frequent maintenance, so some professional handyman services might not offer power washing.
#6) Tile Installation
General handyman services can often perform tile installation over a prepared subfloor. While tile installation work sounds simple—lay down adhesive, smooth it out, and put a tile over it—there’s a lot more to installing tile than that.
For example, handymen installing tile have to carefully measure the floor space so they can cut tiles to match the edges of the installation site. They also have to lay the tiles precisely to prevent crooked layouts and wasted space. Finally, non-vitreous (water absorbent) tiles will likely need to be sealed to prevent them from soaking up moisture. Flooring professionals and handymen service providers experienced with flooring jobs will likely have the right tools and skills to handle these issues.
#7) Window Repair
Many handyman services can provide window repairs for a nominal fee. This can include helping to clean up broken glass and repairing/replacing the window frame, as well as the window itself.
If the windows in the home are a non-standard size, however, it may be necessary to reach out to a specialist.
#8) Small Appliance Repair
Many homeowners would rather fix a broken appliance than have to replace the whole thing with a new one. So, one popular type of handyman service is small appliance repair. In many cases, the handyman can fix the issue with the appliance for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one. At the very least, they can often provide an estimate if the cost of repair would be prohibitive compared to the cost of replacing.
